On the Expression of Anger

Information Technology

There are those who speak the truth while in a fit of rage. However, their words are not true because they are angry. Conversely, in today’s social climate, even if one is speaking the truth, doing so with anger is often branded as power harassment. Simply put, the occasions deemed appropriate for exercising anger have become profoundly displaced.

Unless a life is at stake, there are arguably few mistakes that are truly irreversible. For instance, while various scandals trigger “flaming” (online firestorms) on social media, not every life-threatening incident receives such attention. In fact, most do not. The watershed moment for becoming a target of public outrage depends on whether the situation has been converted into a narrative where “obvious evil” is easily visible.

Anger possesses tremendous energy and can move both people and circumstances. Social media platforms exploit this economically; those who express anger feel as though they have changed something and derive a sense of satisfaction from it. Anger carries a powerful message. However, I highly doubt whether the expression of anger in the modern age is truly delivering the messages that society actually needs.
