On Idiocy and Wisdom

On Judgment and Indicators

Perhaps true human wisdom consists of living “idiotically” well among “idiots.” However, the “wisdom” valued by society—high academic credentials or a high IQ—requires rigorous logical thinking. Furthermore, at the root of society lies the legal system, the pinnacle of logic. Yet, those with high credentials or high IQs are almost always a minority; “idiots” constitute the majority.

The virtue of democracy is not the “correctness” of the majority, but the fact that because the majority decided it, it is more “equitable” (valid). The tragedy is that while the standards of society are constructed by the “wise” who handle logic, those very standards make it inevitable that one must follow the “idiots” (the majority).

Therefore, those living in society must value logical thinking while simultaneously being forced to figure out how to live “idiotically” well among “idiots.” The larger the population, the higher the absolute number of “idiots.” Meanwhile, humans must collaborate to survive. Logic is merely a tool for this “sharability.”

Because survival requires collaboration, the prioritization of logic—a tool for sharing—becomes a hallmark of wisdom. But the more it is prioritized, the more “idiocy” is rendered visible. So long as we employ the power of logic, we cannot escape “idiocy.” It is better to consider how to carry oneself “idiotically” well among “idiots.”
